Makeup kit essentials for beginners

We often see people owning different types of makeup kits. The different products, the enticing collections are often very fascinating. You feel like you want them all. There is a point when we start with our process of building our own makeup kit. I am sure many of us have gone through this phase and many of us are just exploring this phase. A little help in this phase (which I never got), surely can be very handy and can also save your energy and money. 🙂

In today’s post, I will tell you about the basic makeup essentials that you need to own for your makeup kit (beginner level). As you go on exploring different products and buying variety of things, you can build up your makeup kit into a more pro-types(so-called) later.

We all know that there are a bouquet of choices available in the market these days when it comes to makeup. This overload of variety and products can often confuse us and even divert us from the essential things we actually need. So what are the basic things that we really need? Read on and create your very own makeup kit.

  • Makeup bag/ box

Before we start buying things and exploring different products, make sure to have a good quality makeup bag or a box where you can keep your makeup properly. You don’t really need to buy a new bag/ box for this, you can always use some old bags/ boxes in your home. Make sure that the bag/ box is clean and resists moisture.

Now that we have our makeup bag/ box ready, lets move on to the interesting part – the makeup 🙂 🙂

  • Primer

A good quality primer makes a huge difference to your makeup and also protects your skin in a way. Hence, investing in a good quality primer suitable for your skin type is very important. This product is often neglected by many people. However, a good primer can make a huge difference to your makeup look as well as your skin.

  • Basic eye shadow palette

Get yourself a basic eye shadow palette in neutral shades. If you like to experiment with some colours for your eye makeup, get a palette that has a mix of neutral and bright shades. Do make sure to check the texture of the eye shadows that you buy. A palette with a good mix of matte and shiny shades is something you should opt for.

  • Eye liner

An eyeliner is again a very basic thing that you need for your makeup kit. There are again an umpteen number of choices available in eyeliners. Don’t get confused and just opt for a good quality liner that you feel you can comfortably use. If you have oily skin, don’t forget to buy the waterproof ones. I would recommend gel liners or pencil liners to start with.

  • Mascara

An instant way to open up your eyes is by using a mascara. And hence, you should buy a mascara for yourself. Remember to again opt for either a waterproof or normal one depending on your skin type. Get a mascara in black or brown shade to start with and do not get tempted with the different coloured ones you get. You are not really going to use them everyday (isn’t it?)

  •  Loose powder/ compact

Yet another basic part of your makeup kit should be a compact or loose powder. You don’t need to buy both of them at the beginning. Any one of them should be good enough. Do check the shades along your jawline before buying them. And yes, buy the ones which are suitable for your skin type. You don’t want to clog the pores and spoil your skin.

  • Lip balm and lip stick (And lip gloss maybe)

I guess this will be your favourite part (it is surely my favourite part ❤ ). A good moisturizing lip balm is a must have to keep your lips well nourished and moist. And then, get a few lipsticks that suit your skin tone. I would recommend buying one nudish shade, 1-2 bright shades and maybe just 1 darker shade for some special events that you may attend. In case you feel uncomfortable wearing any of the shades, don’t just buy them compulsorily. Always opt for the ones you feel comfortable wearing. If you want you can also buy a lip gloss in a neutral shade or any other shade you like. Remember not to overbuy these as you may not really use them all. Try them and think for yourself if you are really going to use them, if you feel comfortable wearing the shade; if the answer is yes then go for it. Don’t splurge at once. You can always keep buying different shades later on to add to your kit 🙂

  • Makeup brushes

A few good quality makeup brushes are as much important as the makeup itself. They help you apply your makeup properly, evenly and give the desired effect. There are a lot of different makeup brushes available that are used for various product applications. However, you don’t really need all of them. Just a few basic ones are enough to help you with your makeup process. Which are the few necessary ones? I would say 1 powder brush, 1-2 eye shadow brushes, 1 lip brush are more than enough to apply all of your different makeup products. If you want, you can opt for the dual brushes you get these days in the market wherein you get two different types of brushes attached to one handle.

  • Foundation and concealer (only if required)

You might wonder why I have not included these products in the beginning and why have I specified ‘only if required’ for them. The simple reason being, not everyone really needs to use a foundation and concealer. If you are blessed with a good skin; a moisturiser, primer and compact is all you need to give you that perfect look. In case you are not, then you can get yourself a foundation and a concealer that is suitable for your skin type and complexion. Also, a lot of us don’t really use a foundation and concealer everyday. We use it only when required.

That is all I feel you really need for your beginner makeup kit. Although there are many more products that you get in the market and you might feel the need to use them, it is not really necessary to buy all of them. The products mentioned above are enough to create different looks with your makeup. Also, there are some multipurpose products in your kit now. For example, your lipsticks can be used as a blush whenever you need. All you have to do is rub a little amount on your cheek and then blend it outwards using your fingers or a powder brush. If required, you can put on some loose powder over the cheek and blend it along with the lipstick (blush) to give it a subtle effect. Similarly, you can even use lipsticks as eyeshadows. Eyeshadows can also be used for contouring and highlighting or to fill your brows.

So yes, trust me, the above products are really enough for your beginner makeup kit. You do not need to have all the different products you see around.

I hope this post was helpful. If you have any queries, do write to me and I will be happy to answer your questions.
